The first time the US heard about Roxette was in
1984 when Gyllene Tider, a Swedish group, released the album “Heartland
Café” in the US under the name Roxette. The very important music
magazine Billboard wrote, “nothing much is happening here” about the album.
When Per played in Gyllene Tider Marie was asked to sing a duet with Per
on a Gyllene Tider concert. When Gyllene Tider was split up Marie and Per
recorded a single called “Neverending Love”. The single was released in
1986 and was followed by Roxettes’ first album “Pearls of Passion” and
a summer tour in Sweden.
In 1989 the album "Look Sharp!" was released.
Roxette became famous in the US thanks to an American exchange student
who brought “Look Sharp!” with him back from Sweden. He gave the album
to a radio station and asked them to listen to “The Look”. The people on
the radio station listen to the song and they like what they here so they
taped it. When the song was played on the radio listeners called and want
to here the song again. Roxette hade a hit in the US without having a single
released. The Look was released as a single and after nine weeks the single
reached the first spot on the Billboard hit list. After “The Look” Roxette
has had another three US #1 hits, “Listen to your heart”; “It must have
been love” and “Joyride”. Roxette has also had several other hits and toured
the world twice. |
